Notes for Microsoft FrontPage Express 2.0
FrontPage Express is a Hyper-Text Mark-up Language (HTML) editor. It functions in a similar manner to a Word-processor application such as Microsoft Word.
The purpose of this document is to provide notes on using FrontPage to create/edit pages based on My templates. Note, that this is not a general tutorial on FrontPage, and is as much about what not to do! Pre-requisites for this document are some knowledge of FrontPage, but no knowledge of HTML, or other Internet technologies.
This page was authored using FrontPage Express (plus manual additions)!
Installing FrontPage Express
FrontPage Express is available from Microsoft (or Olivet Nazarene University ).
File > Open...
Open the template (.htm or .html) file.
File > Save As...
Immediately save with your chosen file-name (so as not to over-write the template). Use the "As File..." option to save to your local machine - do not try to save to the Web at this stage. You're now ready to begin editing...
Document Title
The title is the most important part of a document, edit via the FrontPage menu: File > Page Properties..., Title.
Paragraphs, Headings and Emphasis
A phrase can be converted to a heading, by selecting it then choosing, for example "Heading 4" from the Change Style drop-down list to the left of the FrontPage tool-bars - "Normal" is usually selected. Choose the appropriate heading for the position in the document-structure:
- Heading 1 - Web-site title,
- Heading 2 - site sub-title,
- Heading 3 - page title,
- Heading 4 - topic headings,
- Heading 5 - sub-topic headings,
- Heading 6 - [unused].
The key point is that we are not concerned with how big the heading appears in FrontPage, or whether it is bold, italic or a different colour or font, simply that it is the appropriate heading for (in this case) a sub-topic in the document. We wish to set the formatting, or "style", of parts of the document separately.
